5 films perfect for those emotional PMS days!

Being a woman is nothing less than a game of monopoly, a series of never ending dramas. Sometimes you’re winning and it’s super glamorous, but then sometimes you’re losing, and every now and again an irrational burst of screaming and shouting appears.

We’ve all been there. It’s ‘that time of the month’ and the slightest thing will set us off on a rampage. We wake up, head downstairs and the face of our other half is enough to send us into fully blown monster mode. Why do they have to breathe so loud? Could you eat those crisps any louder? Why have you put the bin bags to the left of the drawer rather than the right? WHY DO YOU HATE ME? You’re at work and someone makes a joke; a joke that usually you would laugh at and join in with instead makes steam come from your ears and an impromptu trip to the toilet to shed a little tear, because how DARE they also not share these irrational moodswings?

When this time of the month is setting in, sometimes we all need a little something to help us get those emotions out. Whether it’s a tub of Ben and Jerries, a run around the park (on your period? Good joke), or a hot bath with Snow Fairy, we all have our go to rituals for when it’s all getting a bit too much. That horrible crying monstrous being inside us is surfacing and the best solution? Sitting in your pyjamas, stuffing your face with sugary snacks whilst having a good, loud, snotty cry into the tissues.

Here are my top 5 favourite PMS films to indulge in when your time of the month is nothing but emotional. Get it all out, sister!

1. Marley and Me (2009)

Okay, okay I know… Mrs Predicatble over here! However, I told you this list was going to be one for the snotty cries and this is definitely it. One for the puppy lovers, you have the pleasure of watching Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson grow their family with their troublesome Labrador, Marley. Based on a true story, this is definitely guaranteed to make you laugh, make your heart warm, and have you crying for the next 3 hours (at least!)

2. Up (2009)

Up is one of the most beautiful Disney Pixar films there are. An animated story of an elderly widower on an adventure to find Paradise Falls, a place his late wife would always dream of going to. Promised tears within the first 10 minutes, this story touches on love, loss and infertility in a way that makes you feel so good inside. Up is guaranteed to make your heart warm and your eyes water. It is a film that if you haven’t seen, you need to ask yourself why and do so ASAP.

3. Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

Oh what a beautiful film. A Tom Hanks classic (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t love Tom Hanks) alongside the absolutely beautiful Meg Ryan, this film follows the story of life after loss. After losing his wife, Maggie, Sam’s son, Jonah, forces him into a national radio talk show in a bid to find him a new love. A gorgeous film that will never get old (can you believe ‘93 was 27 years ago?!), this is the perfect film to snuggle into the duvet and drown your sorrows into.

4. 10 things I hate about you (1999)

Oh, Heath Ledger, a soul gone way too soon. 10 things I hate about you is the film everyone has seen, and if you haven’t, you’re constantly told “OH MY GOD HOW HAVE YOU NEVER SEEN 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU?!” (It’s okay girls, I was that person until about 2 years ago!). Starring Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Julia Stiles, 10 things I hate about you is the story of a teenager who can’t go on a date until her stroppy sister does, the perfect chick flick for every month.

5. PS I Love You (2007)

My oh my, oh my. Predictable? Maybe. A film that regardless how many times you watch it you will cry to over and over and over again? Absolutely. Hilary Swank is incredible and wholly convincing throughout the entire film, a film about a young window who is receiving regular messages from her dead husband. A beautifully directed film with Gerard Butler making us all wish we were the loves of his life (hello!), this is a film that will make you forget your PMS demons, hug your partner (or Mum, or dog, or pillow) even harder and cry all those PMS tears out in one big, lengthy, chesty, gross sob.

There are so many films that could have made it onto this list but these are my personal PMS favourites! It was a hard list to create, with films like Good Will Hunting, The Notebook, Lion King and Beaches being close winners, but these top 5 are guaranteed to make your PMS afternoons an afternoon of true sobs and ice cream. Happy crying!
